Chain Link Fence Types
There are a variety of chain link types. First is color or coating. Galvanized chain link is the raw form of chain link fence. Then there are:
- Brown vinyl wrapped chain link
- Black vinyl wrapped chain link
Brown vinyl chain link fence is hard to come by, and is not a common request. However, we can order it for you. Turnaround times may be 2+ months depending on the time of the year it's ordered.
Black vinyl chain link fence is much easier to get and is readily available. This is a common request among our customer due to its durability and muted appearance. It blends much better with the outdoors than a silver galvanized chain link fence.
Underneath the vinyl coating is still the galvanized fence, you will just see much longer longevity out of a wrapped fence versus a raw galvanized fence. People seem to prefer the higher-end design appearance of the black vinyl fence over the traditional chain link.
Costs for the vinyl coated fence are slightly higher than the raw galvanized, but not by much.
Heights of Chain Link Fence
The most common height for a backyard is 3 1/2' or 4'. 4 feet high is the more common in today's market. 3 1/2 feet tall was an older height of the chain link fence which is less common today. The current fence in your backyard may seem shorter or higher than these heights due to the posts being lifted out of the ground or the fence being sunk into the ground.
In residential, you usually don't go over 5' tall as higher than that appears more "industrial" in appearance and is less attractive. Many villages do not allow taller than that for this very reason.
Commercial vs Residential
In commercial, it is not uncommon to see heights of chain link fences to exceed 6' in height. Often times the fence material is a thicker gauge material, posts are larger, and also may be topped with barbed wire. Commercial chain link serves an entirely different purpose.
